Description
Acaena inermis purpurea, commonly known as Purple Bidibidi, is a hardy, low-maintenance groundcover native to New Zealand. This evergreen plant is prized for its lush carpet of plum-purple, fern-like leaves that intensify in color under full sun. Growing to 10 cm tall and spreading up to 1 meter, it's ideal for rock gardens, between paving stones, or in borders.
Purple Bidibidi thrives in poor soil and exposed locations but requires good drainage and summer moisture. Unlike other Acaena species, its inconspicuous brown seedheads lack barbs or spines, making it non-invasive. The plant is particularly striking when mass planted or paired with silver or black foliaged plants.
This versatile groundcover adapts well to difficult situations, offering both aesthetic appeal and practical coverage. Its purple foliage and easy-care nature make it an excellent choice for various landscaping applications, from rockeries to softening paved edges.
