Description

Grows to a height of 10m.

Alectryon excelsus, commonly known as titoki, is an attractive evergreen tree native to New Zealand. It features a spreading canopy with large, glossy, mid-green pinnate leaves that have serrated edges. New growth has a striking reddish-orange tinge.

Titoki grows upright with a rounded head, reaching heights suitable for shade or street trees. It produces tiny, petal-less flowers with a rusty hue in summer, followed by distinctive fruit: shiny black seeds emerging from bright red arils that attract birds.

This versatile tree adapts to various conditions but prefers well-drained, fertile soil in full sun or partial shade. While young trees may need frost protection, established titoki can tolerate light frosts. It thrives in coastal areas and lowland forests, making it suitable for both urban and rural landscapes.
