Description

Grows to a height of 1m.

Apodasmia similis, commonly known as oioi or jointed rush, is a hardy native New Zealand wetland reed. It features fine, grey-green leaves with distinctive brownish bracts or joints along the stems, giving it a unique appearance. Growing up to 1m tall and 1.5m wide, oioi spreads via creeping rhizomes.

This versatile plant thrives in various conditions, from wet to dry areas, making it ideal for problem spots in gardens. It's particularly well-suited to coastal locations, lakes, marshlands, and estuaries. Oioi prefers full sun and damp, swampy areas but can tolerate dry conditions once established.

Oioi is popular in landscaping for its structural qualities and is excellent for mass planting. It's remarkably hardy, tolerating extremes of wind and salt, and can even grow in water. In dry, poor sites, the foliage may take on an attractive yellowish hue. This adaptable plant is also suitable for container growing, making it a versatile choice for both home gardens and large-scale architectural landscaping projects.
