Description

Grows to a height of 1m.

Astelia banksii, also known as Shore Astelia or Wharawhara, is a hardy, evergreen perennial native to New Zealand's North Island coast. This architecturally interesting plant features narrow, arching silver-green leaves that form large, tufted clumps growing up to 1m tall and 60cm wide.

In spring, Astelia banksii produces spikes of fragrant, pale green flowers tinted with ivory, which are followed by purple-black or pink berries in autumn. This plant is well-suited for creating texture in mixed borders or native gardens and is particularly effective when group planted.

Astelia banksii is notably tolerant of various conditions, including drought, poor soils, wind, and coastal environments. It prefers full sun to partial shade and thrives in rich, free-draining soil. This versatile plant is ideal for planting on top of walls or in raised beds where it can enjoy good drainage and exposure.

Requiring only moderate watering and tolerating light frost, Astelia banksii is an easy-care option for gardeners. It's equally at home in the ground or in containers, making it a flexible choice for diverse landscaping needs.
