Description
Carex tenuiculmis is a distinctive native New Zealand sedge, known for its reddish-brown to red-wine coloration. This attractive tussock-forming plant widely used throughout New Zealand in amenity plantings.
Typically growing to about 40-70 cm in height and 50-100 cm in width, Carex tenuiculmis can reach up to 1 meter tall with a spread of 1.5 meters in ideal conditions. It forms circular, low-growing clumps with short, spreading rhizomes.
While naturally adapted to wetland margins, this versatile sedge can tolerate a range of conditions. It thrives best in sunny, permanently damp situations but can also withstand extremely dry conditions, though it may not flourish in such environments. Carex tenuiculmis is well-suited for wetlands, swamps, ponds, and waterways, and is easy to grow in most soil types.
Carex tenuiculmis is hardy and adaptable, tolerating both full sun and semi-shade. Its attractive appearance and versatility make it a popular choice for various landscaping applications, particularly in mixed plantings where its color can provide striking contrast.
