Description

Grows to a height of 2.5m.

Clianthus puniceus 'Albus', also known as the white Kakabeak or Kowhai ngutukaka in Maori, is a distinctive and highly sought-after native New Zealand shrub. This variety is notable for its showy, cream-white flowers, which are a striking departure from the typical red of the species.

Growing to approximately 2-2.5 meters tall and 1-1.5 meters wide, this evergreen shrub features long, spreading branches covered in small, soft, light green leaves. The plant's most distinctive feature is its clusters of large, silky, cream-white flowers with a greenish hue, which hang along the branches in winter and spring. These nectar-rich flowers are particularly attractive to native birds.

Clianthus puniceus 'Albus' prefers full sun to partial shade and thrives in well-drained soils. Once established, it can tolerate dry conditions and is suitable for coastal areas. However, it can be frost-sensitive, especially when young, so some protection is advisable in colder regions.

For best results, plant in a well-drained soil away from heavy frosts and strong winds. Light pruning after flowering helps maintain its shape and promotes healthy growth. This plant is not only ornamental but also ecologically valuable, making it a prized addition to native gardens and landscaping projects.
