Description

Grows to a height of 3m.

Clianthus puniceus 'Rosea', commonly known as Kākābeak, is a striking evergreen shrub native to New Zealand, admired for its showy, beak-shaped flowers that bloom from late winter through spring. Growing up to 2-3 meters tall and wide, this medium-sized shrub features pendulous clusters of vibrant pink-red flowers that resemble the curved beak of the native Kākā bird, adding a dramatic splash of color to any garden. The flowers are followed by green pods that turn black as the seeds ripen, extending the plant's visual interest into late autumn.

The plant's fine, fern-like foliage, with its bright green leaflets, provides a lush backdrop to the stunning flowers, creating a captivating contrast. Clianthus puniceus 'Rosea' is ideal for a variety of garden styles, including native plantings, cottage gardens, and wildlife gardens, where it serves as an attractive focal point. It is particularly effective when trained against a wall, used in mixed borders, or planted in coastal gardens. Additionally, the plant is known to attract nectar-feeding birds, enhancing the garden's biodiversity.

Kākābeak thrives in full sun to partial shade, preferring well-drained soil and a sheltered position away from heavy frosts and strong winds. It is relatively short-lived but can be maintained through regular pruning after flowering to encourage bushier growth. Clianthus puniceus 'Rosea' also does well in containers, provided they have adequate drainage and are watered frequently, especially during hot summer months. This shrub is a versatile and eye-catching addition to any garden, offering both beauty and functionality with its dramatic blooms and dense foliage.
