Description
Coprosma 'Hawera' is a hardy, evergreen, New Zealand native shrub known for its low-growing, compact, and spreading habit. This plant typically grows up to 60 cm tall and spreads 2 to 2.5 meters wide, forming a tight mat of small, narrow, olive-green leaves that create a lush, moss-like appearance. The branchlets are yellowish, and although 'Hawera' is a female clone, it rarely produces fruit. When it does, the tiny white fruits turn pale blue in March and April.
This tough and versatile plant thrives in a wide range of conditions, making it an excellent choice for coastal gardens, high-traffic areas, and amenity plantings. It tolerates strong winds, drought, frost, and poor soils, making it particularly well-suited for dry, exposed sites. It can even withstand light foot traffic and the occasional vehicle, making it ideal for areas where other plants may struggle to grow.
Coprosma 'Hawera' is perfect for mass planting, especially on banks, walls, and rockeries, where its cascading branches create a beautiful, dense ground cover. Its fast-growing nature and ability to suppress weeds make it an excellent landscape plant for covering large areas. To achieve the best results, plant 'Hawera' in full sun to light shade, where it will quickly form a hardy, low-maintenance mat that adds both beauty and function to any garden.
