Description

Grows to a height of 6m.

Coprosma lucida, commonly known as Karamū or Shining Karamū, is a hardy, evergreen shrub or small tree native to New Zealand. It typically thrives in coastal areas, lowland forests, and shrublands, where its tough, resilient nature makes it an ideal choice for coastal planting and revegetation projects. Reaching a moderate height, this plant is characterized by its large, thick, glossy green leaves, which are paler underneath and often have a pointed tip with a distinctive ridge along the midrib.

From January to June, Coprosma lucida produces vibrant red-orange berries, which are highly attractive to native birds such as bellbirds, tuis, and waxeyes. These berries not only enhance the visual appeal of the plant but also play a crucial role in increasing biodiversity by attracting birds that help disperse seeds of other plant species.

Karamū is well-suited for a variety of garden and landscape uses, including as a low shelter or hedge, thanks to its dense foliage and robust growth. It prefers full sun to partial shade and thrives in areas with sufficient moisture, although it can tolerate the challenging conditions often found in coastal shrublands. The plant is also attractive to bees, making it a valuable addition to any garden focused on supporting local wildlife.
