Description
Coprosma repens, commonly known as Mirror Bush, is an evergreen shrub native to New Zealand, renowned for its thick, glossy, dark-green leaves that reflect light and provide year-round visual appeal. This hardy plant is particularly well-suited for coastal areas, where it thrives despite salt-laden winds, harsh conditions, and drought. Its resilience and adaptability make it an excellent choice for a variety of landscape uses, including as a screening plant, windbreak, or shelter for more tender plants.
From mid-winter to mid-summer, Coprosma repens produces small, greenish-white flowers, which are subtle but add a touch of interest to the glossy foliage. Following the flowering period, female plants develop small, egg-shaped berries that range in color from orange to red, providing a striking contrast against the dark leaves and enhancing the shrub's decorative appeal.
This versatile shrub thrives in full sun to partial shade, with more sunlight encouraging brighter leaf colors. It prefers moist, well-drained soil with a neutral to slightly acidic pH. In addition to its popularity in coastal gardens, Coprosma repens is widely used in landscaping for hedging, screening, and container planting due to its vibrant color, dense growth, and low-maintenance nature. Its ability to withstand salt spray and coastal winds makes it an indispensable choice for seaside gardens and other exposed, windy locations.
