Description

Grows to a height of 20m.

Cordyline australis, commonly known as the Cabbage tree or Tī Kōuka in Māori, is an iconic New Zealand native plant. Recognizable by its tall, straight trunk(s) and dense, spherical head of long, narrow green leaves, this evergreen species is highly adaptable and thrives in various climates and soil conditions throughout New Zealand.

In late spring to early summer, Cabbage trees produce spectacular cream-colored, fragrant flowers in large panicles, attracting pollinators. From mid-summer to early autumn, they bear fruit favored by native birds such as kererū and tūī. The tree also provides nesting sites for bellbirds and foraging opportunities for some lizards and insects.

Cordyline australis is versatile in garden design, suitable for use as a specimen plant, in group plantings, or as part of mixed borders. For a natural look, planting multiple trees together creates an attractive multi-trunked effect. As a light-demanding pioneer species, young Cabbage trees require open spaces to establish themselves.

Hardy and low-maintenance, Cordyline australis is an excellent choice for gardeners in most regions of New Zealand. Its striking form, ecological value, and adaptability make it both a practical and aesthetically pleasing addition to gardens and landscapes.
