Description

Grows to a height of 7m.

Dodonaea viscosa, commonly known as hop bush, Green Ake Ake, or akeake, is a fast-growing, evergreen shrub or small tree admired for its dense, bushy structure and attractive foliage. It typically grows up to 7 meters in height and 2.5 meters in width, depending on conditions and management. The plant features long, narrow, leathery leaves that range in color from bright green to reddish-purple, providing a vibrant splash of color in the landscape.

From late winter to mid-summer, Dodonaea viscosa produces small, ornamental flowers that range from yellow-green to pink, followed by distinctive papery, winged seed capsules in summer and autumn. These features, combined with its lush, dense foliage, make it an excellent choice for use as a screen, windbreak, or trimmed hedge. It can also be utilized in native plantings, mixed borders, coastal gardens, or as a backdrop for smaller plants.

This species is incredibly resilient, capable of thriving in full sun and adapting to a wide range of soil types, although it prefers well-drained soils. It tolerates harsh conditions, including drought, salt-laden winds, polluted atmospheres, and even sub-zero temperatures. Due to its hardiness, Dodonaea viscosa is particularly well-suited for challenging sites, such as dune stabilization, erosion control, and reforestation projects. Native to tropical, subtropical, and warm temperate regions of Africa, the Americas, southern Asia, and Australasia, Dodonaea viscosa is a versatile and attractive addition to any garden or landscape.
