Description

Grows to a height of 7m.

Griselinia littoralis, commonly known as Kapuka or Broadleaf, is a versatile and hardy evergreen tree native to New Zealand. This popular plant is highly valued for its dense, lush foliage, making it an ideal choice for both formal hedges and informal shelter belts. Naturally growing to heights of 10 to 20 meters, Griselinia littoralis can be pruned to maintain a shorter shrub or hedge form, typically ranging from 4 to 8 meters in height and 2.5 to 4 meters in width.

The plant is characterized by its large, oval leaves, which are leathery, glossy, and bright green, providing a vibrant, lush appearance year-round. Although it produces small, cream-colored flowers in spring, these are relatively insignificant compared to its dense foliage, which is the primary attraction. In autumn, female trees bear small purple-black fruits, adding a subtle yet attractive feature to the landscape.

Griselinia littoralis is incredibly adaptable, thriving in a range of soil types but preferring well-drained soil in full sun. It is exceptionally hardy, tolerating frost, strong winds, drought, and salt spray, making it an excellent choice for coastal gardens. When left untrimmed, it can develop into a round-headed tree with rough, dark trunks, providing additional visual interest.

This plant is not only aesthetically pleasing but also highly functional, offering excellent shelter in hedgerows and home gardens. Its dense growth habit makes it an effective windbreak and a popular choice for creating privacy screens. Additionally, the colorful berries it produces are attractive to birds, enhancing the biodiversity of the garden. Whether used in a formal setting or a more naturalistic garden design, Griselinia littoralis is a reliable and attractive addition to any landscape.
