Description
Hebe 'Wiri Mist,' commonly known as Shrubby Veronica, is a compact, spreading evergreen shrub native to New Zealand. It is highly valued for its low-maintenance nature and versatility in garden design, making it an excellent choice for hedging, garden borders, rockeries, and container planting. This attractive shrub typically grows up to 60 cm tall and 80 cm to 1 meter wide, forming a dense, flat-topped mound of fresh green foliage.
The spear-shaped leaves of Hebe 'Wiri Mist' are closely set on short stems, creating a lush and attractive appearance. In late spring to early summer, the plant produces an abundance of short spikes of delicate white flowers, which often bloom again in autumn, adding a touch of elegance to any garden. These flowers contrast beautifully with the vibrant green leaves, making Hebe 'Wiri Mist' a standout feature in any landscape.
Hebe 'Wiri Mist' thrives in poor to moderately fertile, well-draining soil, with a preference for neutral to alkaline conditions. It grows best in full sun to partial shade and is tolerant of coastal sites and frost, making it a hardy choice for a variety of garden settings. Whether used in mixed plantings, borders, or as ground cover, this shrub is a fantastic option for those looking to add year-round interest to their garden with minimal effort.
Jack Hobbs raised this hebe cultivar prior to 1991 at the Auckland Regional Botanic Garden, New Zealand, as part of a program to breed hebes suitable for the Auckland climate. The parents are Hebe albicans and Hebe diosmifolia.
