Description

Grows to a height of 12m.

Hedycarya arborea, commonly known as pigeonwood, is an attractive evergreen tree native to New Zealand.

Pigeonwood is characterized by its dark green, glossy, oblong leaves with softly toothed edges, which provide a lush and appealing appearance. In late spring to late summer, the tree produces small, fragrant green and white flowers. These flowers are inconspicuous but important, as they appear on separate male and female trees, meaning both sexes must be planted together to produce fruit.

The tree's most striking feature is its bright orange-red, oval-shaped fruit, which appears from early autumn to mid-winter. The fruit adds vibrant color to the tree and enhances its value as a food source for wildlife.

Hedycarya arborea thrives in good soil with adequate moisture and requires a sheltered position with semi-shade to protect it from frost, especially when young. It is best suited for warmer conditions, particularly in the northern parts of New Zealand. Propagation is typically done by seed or cuttings.

Ideal for forest plantings, garden borders, or as a specimen tree, pigeonwood offers year-round interest with its glossy foliage, fragrant flowers, and striking fruit. Its ability to attract native birds like the kererū further adds to its appeal, making it a valuable addition to New Zealand gardens and natural landscapes.
