Description
Hoheria populnea, commonly known as lacebark, is a graceful and fast-growing evergreen tree native to New Zealand, particularly found in the lowland forests of the Northern North Island. Reaching heights of 4 to 6 meters, this tree is well-loved for its delicate appearance, with slender branches and fresh green, heavily serrated leaves that add texture and visual interest to the landscape. Some selections of this species feature leaves with purple undersides, further enhancing its ornamental appeal.
In late summer and autumn, Hoheria populnea produces a stunning display of star-shaped, white flowers that appear in great profusion, creating a beautiful and fragrant spectacle. This prolific flowering makes the tree an excellent choice for use as a feature plant, as well as for rapid screening or boundary planting, where its quick growth can provide effective coverage.
Lacebark thrives in moist, fertile soil but is adaptable to a variety of soil conditions, making it a versatile option for different garden settings. It is particularly suited for mild sites, as it can be frost-tender when young. Additionally, its deep green foliage and abundant flowers make it a standout choice for mixed borders or as a specimen tree.
Hoheria populnea not only adds aesthetic value to the garden but also plays a role in supporting local wildlife. Native wood pigeons are known to eat the foliage tips when other food sources are scarce, making this tree a valuable addition to a wildlife-friendly garden.
