Description

Grows to a height of 8m.

Leptospermum scoparium, commonly known as Mānuka or Tea Tree, is a versatile and captivating native shrub of New Zealand. While it is typically known to grow up to 3 meters tall, this fast-growing evergreen can, in fact, reach impressive heights of up to 30 meters under the right conditions.

One of the standout features of Mānuka is its profusion of small, star-shaped flowers that bloom from late spring to summer. These delicate blooms can range in color from pure white to vibrant pink and red, creating a striking display against the plant's fine, aromatic green foliage. The flowers are highly attractive to bees, making Mānuka a valuable nectar source for the production of the highly prized Mānuka honey.

Beyond its ornamental qualities, Mānuka is also an incredibly hardy and adaptable plant. It thrives in a wide range of soil types, including sandy and loamy soils, and is particularly well-suited to coastal environments. Once established, this resilient shrub is drought-tolerant and requires minimal maintenance, making it an excellent choice for low-maintenance gardens and revegetation projects. Regular watering during the establishment phase and light pruning after flowering can help maintain Mānuka's shape and encourage dense growth.

In the landscape, Mānuka's versatility shines through. It can be used as an effective screen or shelter plant, its fast growth and hardy nature making it an ideal "nurse crop" for other native species in revegetation efforts. In the home garden, Mānuka's fine foliage and floriferous nature make it a lovely addition to mixed borders, hedges, and native plantings, adding both texture and color to the garden.
