Description
Lobelia angulata, also known as Panakenake or White Star Creeper, is a versatile native groundcover from New Zealand. This low-growing perennial forms a dense mat of foliage, typically reaching 15cm in height and spreading up to 1 meter wide.
The plant features small, rounded, dark green leaves with serrated edges. From spring through summer, it produces abundant tiny, star-shaped white flowers, followed by red berries in autumn. This flowering and fruiting cycle makes it attractive to both pollinators and birds.
Lobelia angulata thrives in various conditions, from full sun to partial shade, preferring moist, well-drained soil. It's particularly suited to damp, shady sites but also tolerates sunny and wet conditions. In colder climates, it may die back in winter but regrows in spring.
Highly valued in gardening, it serves as an excellent groundcover, works well in rock gardens and between stepping stones, and can act as a lawn substitute in low-traffic areas. While it can spread vigorously, its attractive qualities and low-maintenance nature make it a popular choice for both novice and experienced gardeners.
