Description

Grows to a height of 6m.

Melicope ternata, commonly known as Wharangi, is a small, New Zealand native tree grown for its lovely foliage. This evergreen bears glossy, lime-green leaves which release a pleasant citrus scent when crushed. Clusters of small, cream-colored, and scented flowers are borne in early spring, followed by shiny black fruits in late summer. Melicope ternata is a rounded, large bush that can grow up to 6 meters tall and 3 meters wide.

Wharangi is naturally distributed between the North Cape and Nelson, and is found growing in coastal to lowland forest. The bright foliage, fast growth rate, and compact size make it ideal for mixed plantings, providing shelter and screening, or as a backdrop for smaller plants. Wharangi prefers full sun to part shade and well-drained, sandy soils that are sheltered from the coastal winds. While slightly frost tender, it can tolerate light frosts.

The glossy, deep green, and aromatic foliage is a key feature of Wharangi, as are the small, yellowish-green flowers that emerge in early spring and the shiny black seeds that develop in late summer, attracting birds. Overall, Melicope ternata is a versatile and attractive native tree that can brighten up a garden and add interest to revegetation projects.
