Description

Grows to a height of 12m.

Melicytus ramiflorus, commonly known as Māhoe or whitey wood, is a small, endemic tree native to New Zealand.

This fast-growing, multi-stemmed tree typically reaches heights suitable for quick screening and revegetation projects. It's characterized by its attractive green foliage and whitish bark. Māhoe is evergreen and relatively hardy, thriving in both sunny and semi-shaded locations, and can tolerate dry conditions once established.

From late spring to late summer, Melicytus ramiflorus produces small, green-yellow flowers rich in nectar, making it a valuable food source for native wildlife. The tree is dioecious, with separate male and female plants. Female trees develop purple berries in autumn, which are dispersed by birds, aiding in forest regeneration.

Māhoe plays a significant role in New Zealand's ecosystems and is commonly used in revegetation projects. It's also valued in gardening as a specimen or shade tree. While generally hardy, young trees should be protected from heavy frosts.

The tree's rapid growth, adaptability, and ecological benefits make it an important species in New Zealand's native forests and a popular choice for both conservation efforts and landscaping.
