Description

Grows to a height of 8m.

Meryta sinclairii, commonly known as the puka or pukanui, is an evergreen tree native to New Zealand, specifically the Three Kings, Hen and Chicken Islands. This small tree is highly valued for its striking tropical appearance, characterized by large, paddle-shaped, glossy leaves that can reach up to 50 cm in length and 20 cm in width. The tree typically grows to a height of 5 to 8 meters, forming a rounded, mushroom-shaped crown with stout branches.

Meryta sinclairii thrives best in a sunny, frost-free environment and is particularly well-suited for coastal gardens due to its resistance to wind and salt. It prefers well-drained, humus-rich soil and has a low water requirement once established. The tree is frost-tender but can tolerate coastal exposure, often growing in a more bushy and lower habit in such conditions. It also makes an excellent choice for growing in containers, adding a dramatic feature to gardens or large decorative pots.

This tree produces inconspicuous green and white flowers from August to April, followed by shiny black fruits, which appear year-round but only on female plants. The puka can be grown indoors with special care, requiring a bright, warm spot with good natural light, well-drained soil, and regular watering.
