Description

Grows to a height of 5m.

Muehlenbeckia complexa, also known as scrambling pohuehue, is a vigorous and hardy semi-deciduous vine native to New Zealand, including the Three Kings, North, South, and Stewart Islands. It thrives in a variety of environments, particularly in coastal areas, lowland and montane shrublands, open scrub, and rocky ground, and is most abundant east of the main divide in the South Island.

This vine is well-suited for covering difficult patches of ground in harsh conditions and can grow into a tangled mass, forming a dense mound up to 2 meters wide and 5 meters high or more. It has small, bright green, rounded leaves on long, wiry stems that creep and climb over surfaces. The plant produces tiny, creamy-white flowers from late spring into early summer, followed by star-shaped, semi-translucent white fruits with black seeds, which are held in fleshy cups that attract geckos, birds, and native insects.

Muehlenbeckia complexa prefers full sun and dry conditions but can also tolerate partial shade. It is extremely wind- and drought-tolerant, making it ideal for coastal plantings, though it does not thrive in wet conditions. This vine is versatile and can be used as a taller ground cover, or it can be trained to climb over banks, walls, or other structures. Its dense, wire-like stems interlace to form a sturdy network that can smother other plants if not managed. Additionally, it is excellent for topiary or as a living sculpture when clipped, adding a unique architectural element to gardens.

Notably, Muehlenbeckia complexa is also a host species for native copper butterflies, making it a valuable addition to wildlife-friendly gardens. Its resilience and adaptability make it a popular choice for challenging sites and coastal landscapes.
