Description

Grows to a height of 10m.

Ngaio (Myoporum laetum) is a fast-growing, evergreen native tree of New Zealand, known for its bright green, glossy leaves and dense foliage. Naturally found in coastal and lowland forests throughout the country, Ngaio is well-suited for a variety of positions, including exposed coastal sites, making it an excellent choice for shelter, windbreaks, and revegetation projects.

Ngaio produces small, star-shaped white flowers with purple spots during spring and summer, followed by purple-black berries that attract birds like wood pigeons. Its foliage, which emits a distinctive scent when crushed, is not only attractive but also resilient, being drought and coastal hardy. However, it’s important to note that the leaves are toxic to livestock, so care should be taken in areas where animals graze.

Thriving in full sun to partial shade, Ngaio prefers well-drained soil but is adaptable to various soil types, including sandy and loamy soils. Once established, it requires minimal watering and is tolerant of coastal conditions and salt spray. Regular pruning helps maintain its shape and encourages dense growth, making it ideal for use as a hedge, screen, or canopy shade tree.

Ngaio is commonly included in coastal gardens, mixed plantings, and native planting schemes, providing ecological benefits by attracting bees and birds. However, the plant is frost-tender when young, so it’s best to avoid heavy frosts during its early stages.
