Description

Grows to a height of 15m.

Lemonwood (Pittosporum eugenioides), also known as tarata, is a New Zealand native tree that can grow up to 15 meters tall and 5 meters wide. When young, it has a conical shape, but as it matures, it becomes more rounded. The tree features large, yellow-green leaves with wavy edges and a prominent midrib, emitting a strong lemon scent when crushed. In late spring to summer, it produces clusters of fragrant yellow-cream flowers, which are attractive to pollinators. These flowers are followed by distinctive black seed capsules.

This evergreen tree is commonly found in regenerating and mature forests from sea level up to 600 meters. It thrives in well-drained soil and can withstand exposed sites, including windy areas, though young plants may be frost-tender. Lemonwood is a fast-growing, hardy tree often used for shelter, screening, or hedging, making it a popular choice in landscaping. Its aromatic leaves and scented flowers make it an attractive option for gardens, while its ability to provide dense foliage down to the ground adds to its value as a shelter or hedging plant.
