Description
Pseudopanax lessonii, also known as houpara or coastal five-finger, is a native New Zealand shrub or small tree that typically grows up to 6 meters tall. It is known for its tropical appearance, with leathery, palmate leaves composed of 3-5 broad, dark green leaflets that have shallow serrations near the tips. From December to February, houpara produces small green flowers, which are followed by dark purple, fleshy fruits that appear from February to May and attract native birds.
This evergreen plant is particularly well-suited for coastal environments, thriving in full sun to partial shade with well-drained soil. It is a hardy choice for coastal planting, making it an excellent option for revegetation projects, mixed native garden beds, or as a windbreak when combined with other plants. However, it is not frost-tolerant and should be protected from heavy frosts. Houpara also responds well to pruning and performs better in drier conditions. Its lush, tropical look makes it a popular choice in gardens, particularly in sheltered coastal areas.
