Description
Pseudopanax lessonii 'Cyril Watson' is a unique and compact evergreen shrub native to New Zealand. Known for its bushy habit, this plant typically reaches a height of 2 to 4 meters and a width of about 1.5 meters. Its distinctive, leathery, and glossy green leaves are composed of three broad lobes, giving it a lush and vibrant appearance. During winter, the foliage may take on a subtle bronze hue.
This cultivar thrives in coastal environments and is particularly suited to well-drained soil, ranging from sandy to clay, and is adaptable to both acidic and alkaline conditions. It prefers full sun to partial shade and, once established, is quite drought-tolerant. 'Cyril Watson' also boasts strong resistance to most common pests and diseases.
Ideal for a variety of garden settings, Pseudopanax lessonii 'Cyril Watson' can be used as a specimen plant, in mixed borders, or as part of an informal hedge. It is also well-suited for growing in containers or as a wind shelter for more delicate plants in mixed shrub beds. Due to its moderate growth rate, the plant is easily manageable, making it a versatile choice for adding texture and screening in the landscape. Protection from harsh frost is recommended, especially for younger plants.
