Description

Grows to a height of 10m.

Tecomanthe speciosa, commonly known as the Three Kings Vine, is a vigorous evergreen climber native to New Zealand’s Three Kings Islands. This impressive vine can grow up to 10 meters tall and 1 meter wide, making it ideal for covering large structures such as walls, fences, or pergolas. It thrives in subtropical gardens and can also be trained over pillars or arches.

Flowering from May to July, Tecomanthe speciosa produces striking clusters of creamy yellow, bell-shaped flowers directly from its stems, providing a stunning display when many other plants are not at their best. After flowering, the vine develops large seed pods up to 15 cm long, which may remain on the plant for several years.

This vine prefers rich, moist soil and requires adequate moisture during the summer months. It performs best in a well-lit position with its roots shaded from direct sunlight. Tecomanthe speciosa is wind hardy and ideal for coastal areas. However, care should be taken when training it over other plants, as its heavy stems require strong support, such as large, well-established trees like kanuka (Kunzea). With proper care and support, this fast-growing climber adds lush, tropical beauty to any landscape.
