Description

Grows to a height of 2m.

Veronica speciosa, commonly known as Napuka, is an evergreen shrub known for its dense, spreading habit and vibrant flowers. This hardy plant typically grows to a height of 1 to 2 meters and can spread up to 3 meters wide, making it a striking addition to any garden. The shrub has stout branches that bear pairs of oval, glossy, fleshy leaves with finely hairy margins. These dark green, shiny leaves usually measure 2 to 5 centimeters in length.

During the summer, and often extending into winter, Veronica speciosa produces impressive spikes of small, deep pinkish-red to purple flowers. The flower spikes can reach up to 8 centimeters long and are densely packed, creating a showy and eye-catching display. Each flower is just under a centimeter wide, with a short throat that spreads into a four-lobed corolla. The inflorescence has a unique, whiskery appearance due to the two long stamens that protrude from the throat of each flower. The plant also produces capsules containing flat, smooth seeds as its fruit.

Napuka's bushy, rounded shape and lush foliage make it a versatile choice for various landscaping applications. It can be included in mixed plantings, used as a border shrub, or planted around outdoor living areas. It is also effective when mass planted on banks or slopes for an impressive display. This plant thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soil, making it suitable for a range of garden environments.
